Happy Worlds month Cheer World! As we approach The Cheerleading Worlds 2022, we’re looking back at some Worlds history. Every season, the increasing number of divisions is a hot topic.

The Cheerleading Worlds began in 2004 with only two divisions and just a handful of teams. A lot has changed in the past 18 years, to say the least. Competitive cheerleading has evolved, and both the IASF and USASF have added and removed divisions to help the sport grow.

Twenty-nine different divisions will compete at The Cheerleading Worlds 2022 with different criteria for sizes, ages, skills, and variables (program size, location, etc). So how did we go from two to twenty-nine divisions? Take a journey with us through the years, and we’ll show you what Worlds divisions were added and removed.

Below you’ll see a timeline of when each division made its debut and when/if it was removed (and perhaps brought back again!).

USASF renamed the coed divisions to Senior Limited Coed 5 and Senior Unlimited Coed 5.

Total divisions: 12

The Cheerleading Worlds 2009

In 2009, USASF split The Senior Limited division into Senior Large Limited Coed Level 5 and Senior Small Limited Coed 5.

The international small and large divisions for both all-girl and coed were removed to create International Open All Girl Level 5 and International Open Coed Level 5. 2009 was the first year the total number of divisions decreased.

Total Divisions: 11

The Cheerleading Worlds 2010

In 2010, USASF created an additional coed division, Senior Semi-Limited Coed Level 5.

Total divisions: 12

The Cheerleading Worlds 2011

In 2011, IASF removed International Junior Level 5 and International Junior Coed Level 5. USASF also added the word large to Senior Large Semi Limited Coed Level 5.

Total divisions: 10

The Cheerleading Worlds 2012

In 2012, USASF added Medium Senior 6 and restructured the coed divisions to Senior Large Coed Level 5, Senior Medium Coed Level 5, and Senior Small Coed Level 5. USASF went from offering four coed divisions to three, which standardized the coed and all-girl division names.

Total divisions: 10

The Cheerleading Worlds 2013, 2014, and 2015

From 2013 to 2015, there were no changes to either the USASF or IASF divisions offered. (The specific rules for each division may have changed.)

Total divisions: 10

The Cheerleading Worlds 2016

In 2016, IASF brought back the small and large coed divisions for both level 5 and level 6, International Open Coed Level 5 Large, International Open Coed Level 5 Small, International Open Coed Level 6 Large, and International Open Coed Level 6 Small.

Total divisions: 12

The Cheerleading Worlds 2017

In 2017, there were no changes to either the USASF or IASF divisions offered. (The specific rules for each division may have changed.)

Total divisions: 12

The Cheerleading Worlds 2018

In 2018, USASF added Extra Small All Girl Level 5 and Extra Small Coed Level 5 divisions exclusively for programs with one Worlds team.

Total divisions: 14

The Cheerleading Worlds 2019

In 2019, seven divisions were added, making it the most significant jump in Worlds history. USASF introduced Senior Open with three divisions, including Senior Open 5, Senior Open Small Coed 5, and Senior Open Large Coed 5. Also, any program could compete in the Extra Small divisions now.

IASF introduced International Non-Tumbling 5 and International Non-Tumbling Coed 5, International Global 5, and International Global Coed 5. The new international divisions were the most significant change to any divisions since The Cheerleading Worlds began. Division changes were based on size and all-girl vs. coed until this point. Non-Tumbling removed elements, and Global introduced a new section.

Total divisions: 21

The Cheerleading Worlds 2020

USASF and IASF adjusted what the division levels meant. Level 5 became level 6, and level 6 became level 7.

IASF also added several divisions that ultimately didn’t compete at Worlds until 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They introduced new level 5 divisions, including International Open 5, International Open Small Coed 5, and International Open Large Coed 5. IASF also introduced International Open Non-Tumbling 7 and International Open Non-Tumbling Coed 7. The new level 5 and non-tumbling 7 divisions are only for non-US-based teams.

Total divisions: 26

The Cheerleading Worlds 2021

In 2021, 21 divisions competed at USASF’s in-person event. However, as mentioned above, the IASF added international-only divisions in 2020. Those international divisions did not compete at the in-person Cheerleading Worlds. At the IASF Virtual Cheerleading Worlds 2021, only the 15 IASF divisions competed. Collectively, there were 26 divisions.

Total divisions: 26

The Cheerleading Worlds 2022

In 2022, USASF added three divisions, including Limited Extra Small / Small, Limited Extra Small Coed, and Limited Small Coed. Only programs with one Worlds team can compete in these new divisions.

Total divisions: 29

The Cheerleading Worlds 2023

For 2023, we know USASF plans to add two more non-tumbling divisions for athletes younger than 18. We do not know if they plan to eliminate any divisions or IASF’s plans for the international divisions.
